I've never been one to go where the herd is going - rather I did what I loved and what I believed in. Maybe not the best way to get rich, but by far the most fun and fulfilling!

What I Do

I'm retired, meaning I do whatever I want. This includes helping interesting startup teams, public speaking on subjects that interest me, very limited angel investing, etc.

Why STEM?

Engineering has always been my creative outlet

School Days

I went to the University of Illinois for both my bachelor's and Master's degrees. Great school!

My Day At Work

I have bounced back and forth between actual engineering and management - this is the life of an entrepreneur. I'm always happiest when I'm back doing engineering.

Best Part

I have only applied for a job once. Ever since then, I've created my own opportunities by starting companies.

Proud Moments

Starting the EV revolution

Challenges

For me, public speaking was impossible until I finally decided to get over my stage fright at age 39. Should have done it decades earlier.

My Family

A family of engineers! My wife is a (retired) civil engineer, and both our kids are pursuing advanced degrees in engineering.

Inspirations

Quite a few people actually. But the common thread has been to seek out people of good character, and those who encourage me to be one myself.

My Advice

Don't take shortcuts. Master the basics like math and science.  Also, it's ok to change your mind about what you want to do. As you grow and learn, whole worlds will open up for you - worlds of opportunity that you never dreamed existed. Explore those worlds!

Hobbies

My craziest hobby is restoring ancient computers - those made before about 1976.

Volunteer Opportunities

I am willing to be contacted by educators for possible speaking engagements in schools or in after school programs or summer camps., I am willing to serve as science fair judge or other temporary volunteer at a local school.

Comments about K-12 STEM

I built my first computer while in high school in 1976, when almost nobody had a computer at home. This was by far more educational than any class that I took in high school!
