I am a scientist and university professor in California. I design cool and smart optical systems—like special kinds of lenses and sensors—that help us see better, gather information more easily, and even make computers work faster, to create technology that can make life better for everyone!

What I Do

I am an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine. I work on creating innovative and smart optical systems that help us see better, sense better, compute more efficiently, and, ultimately, improve our well-being.

Why STEM?

STEM is incredible because it allows me to understand, discover, and explore new ideas. The process of learning, experimenting, and uncovering new insights through STEM training is deeply rewarding and fulfilling.

School Days

I completed my undergraduate studies in China, earned my Ph.D. in the USA, and conducted postdoctoral research in France. This journey gave me the opportunity to experience diverse education systems and research environments across three different continents.

My Day At Work

My workday involves teaching courses, conducting research, and meeting with students and colleagues. I spend time brainstorming new ideas, reviewing literature, and writing articles to share our latest findings.

Best Part

The best part of my work is the opportunity to positively impact people's lives—whether through education, mentorship, or collaborating with them on meaningful projects.

Proud Moments

My proudest moments come when my students achieve their goals and when I contribute to science by making new discoveries and creating innovative engineering designs.

Inspirations

I’m inspired by seeing more and more female scientists making incredible achievements in STEM. Their success shows what’s possible and motivates me to keep pushing forward.

My Advice

My advice is simple: go for it! A career in STEM is exciting, rewarding, and full of opportunities—for anyone who is curious and ready to make a difference.

Volunteer Opportunities

I am willing to be contacted by educators for possible speaking engagements in schools or in after school programs or summer camps., I am willing to serve as science fair judge or other temporary volunteer at a local school., I am willing to host a field trip to my place of employment., I am willing to be contacted about potential job shadowing by interested students., I am willing to be interviewed by interested students via email.

Overcoming Doubt

Focus on your own journey and celebrate every improvement, no matter how small. Progress is progress, and each step forward is a victory. By directing our energy toward self-growth and recognizing our achievements, we build resilience and confidence. Remember, true strength and growth come when we stay focused on becoming the best version of ourselves rather than comparing our path to others.

Discovering Optional Career

Life is short, and it's worth embracing and exploring different possibilities. Treat every opportunity as a valuable life experience. Be courageous and open to new paths. I believe that the more we try, see, and experience, the clearer our understanding becomes of what we truly want and who we really are.

Embracing Identity

I believe that everyone has a unique identity. We are all different, and that’s something to be proud of. Our identity is a significant part of what makes us who we are. Embracing our identity means accepting and celebrating our uniqueness. When we respect and value our true selves, others are more likely to respect us in return.

Acting as an Ally

Being an ally means standing with and supporting those with less power by listening, learning, and using our voice to amplify theirs. It’s about taking action, showing up consistently, and creating space for others. Small actions, done with respect and humility, can make a real difference.

Obstacles Helpful for Youth

It's okay to struggle, make mistakes, and even feel like we’re wasting time—it’s all part of the journey. These experiences teach us valuable lessons and help us grow into better versions of ourselves. No one is perfect, and our setbacks often lead to the greatest growth. Embrace the process and trust that every step, even the difficult ones, has meaning.

Companies Mitigate Challenges

I suggest creating more opportunities for interactions between role models and youth from similar backgrounds. People are inspired when they see others like themselves succeeding. It shows them that their goals are possible. Additionally, we should increase the visibility of underrepresented groups in technical careers so that their presence becomes normalized. When diversity becomes part of the norm, it helps break stereotypes and fosters a more inclusive environment where everyone feels they belong.
