Addressing Disrespect or Harassment

Unfortunately, many engineers, especially those in underrepresented groups, have experienced disrespect or harassment at some point in their education or careers. The response below show that while these situations are difficult, you do have options: trust your instincts, speak up when something doesn’t feel right, reach out to those you trust, document what happens, and lean on allies who can support you.

You’ll see different approaches below, from setting clear boundaries to seeking help from teachers or leaders, to finding mentors who can guide you through tough situations. Some advice focuses on staying calm and confident; some focuses on recognizing when a situation is toxic and removing yourself from it.
